As a resident of Marondera I was not only relieved, but felt exonerated about my gut-feeling about so-called prophet Lawrence Katsiru, who was convicted of raping a 13-year-old child. I can only blame myself as a journalist for failing to expose my that gut feeling before he did so much damage to our community. Now that he has been convicted it seems I am joining everyone else in kicking him when he is down, but I would like to believe that there is a lesson to be learnt in analysing this enigmatic man. Katsitu's church, with its white-gown-wearing followers was by far the largest "industry", in Marondera with people coming from all over the country, and some from abroad, for all-night prayer and healing sessions in the early 1990s. The only time I would get see my South Africa-based cousin, a medical doctor, was when he came up to Marondera for prayer sessions at Katsiru's. They would spend the night in a the bushes just outside the perimeter of Yellow City where I lived. People would tell us of the miracles that he performed using prayer, holy water and pebbles; how he exorcised evil spirits, and solved just about any problem that was brought to him - whether its was impotence, finding a job or illness. As my attitude towards religion and claims of super-natural powers was that one should not interfere with others' beliefs, or let-sleeping dogs lie, the only thing that bothered me about our domestic servant going to Katsiru's church was the amount of our washing powder that she used to keep her gowns whiter than white. She even dressed up my son in his white clothes and took him to the church with him, which I still saw nothing wrong with as I believed that anything that exposed him to the idea of a God greater than us was surely a good thing - and I did not seem to have time for church. I kept hearing stories about Katsiru molesting women in the prayer sessions, but never with strong enough evidence - and when it did occur to me to say let me investigate this issue, I never managed. Now with hindsight, I must admit that I had a fear of challenging such a powerful figure as he was, being also a senior council official and Zanu PF provincial political commissar - especially since I was also living in the same neighbourhood with him. His speciality was setting the stage for which-ever senior Zanu PF politician - usually Sydney Sekeramayi - was coming to address the poor people of this town which seems to have been left behind by the march of time. If it was about this time of year the Chefs would have come to remind them to pay money for the 21st February celebration of Mugabe's birthday. The people complain, but eventually everyone, including poor widows relying on buying tomatoes from the market and selling them on the streets closer to their homes, coughs up. When I did meet Katsiru in community meetings I could tell he was not educated; his eyes were shifty like a criminal trying to find a way. My scepticism increased about him as I could not imagine this very mortal and a bit dull man, boot-licking Zanu PF chefs for a living, would at night be transformed into the messiah that people said he was. All I could think of was that he was a conman playing tricks on gullible people. The stories I managed to get about him were of how he was a gifted medium at about the time that Zanu PF''s Zanla forces were penetrating the interior in Wedza. He was considered valuable for his ability to predict for the liberation fighters when the soldiers were coming and for that he was kept protected. One day however he was cornered by the security forces and used to set a trap for the liberation fighters. He guided the security forces to the hut where the liberation fighters were then left as a signal for them to attack, which they did and killed all the comrades in the hut. Katsiru then left the area and sort to evade the avenging spirits of the comrades by becoming a prophet in the Apostolic Faith Church, moving to Marondera where he became not only a popular healer but also political commissar because of his ability to draw crowds and and work them up with any message he is given - skills which Zanu PF deperately needed. When he, uneducated as he was, beat me for a job as council public relations officer, I realised that there was no need to expect rationality out of Marondera Council despite that it now had an executive mayor who was a University of Zimbabwe graduate, Mr Lovemore Mukungatu. With his new job as council public relations officer, and whatever he got from his propheting business, Katsiru was proud to tell me that he was sending his children to private school at about the same time that he was also spearheading the invasions of farms around Marondera. He was also said to have taken vehicles from white farmers who he promised protection, only to let them be invaded knowing that they would never come back to him to claim their trucks. So he also profited from the blood money that Zanu PF continues to dish out, but carried on preaching the word of god and claiming spiritual healing powers. Maybe he was putting in practice the philosophy of another clergyman from Marondera who fell from grace because of similar antics. The Reverend Doma could move a crowed with his preaching about morality, but privately, McGyver, as he was popularly known, would be heard to say "do as I say, not as I do." Either way it is good to see that an evil system eventually collapses, which give me hope that it is a matter of time for the Zanu PF system will eventually fall.
